Our boys raised an amazing amount of money this year by reading alone! All classes from second to sixth were asked to read as many books as they could in a month and if possible get sponsored. Suffice to say they did us proud!

Big Band Experience

Our band were out in force last week for radio Kerry's visit to Listowel. You can hear them in action again this week when we head down town for some carol singing! See you there!

Fire Safety Talk

Fireman Ned Keane came to second and third class this week for a very important talk on fire safety. As you can see we had a few demonstrations on how to hold various fire safety equipment. Each pupil then had to complete a fire safety survey at home with their parents.

We are so proud of our boys who played a fantastic final last Thursday evening in Tralee. We were up against Gaelscoil Trali . Some might think a score of 4 goals and 7 would win you the match but unfortunately it was not to be. Our boys played with heart to the final whistle and for they can have no regrets.

Due to the terrible weather this year we were unable to plan for a sports day. On Thursday when we got a few dry hours we ran off the class races. Intense competition between the heats made for great finals.

The Infant League final was held today for the junior and senior infants. While rules and regulations can be often hard to remember when you have a ball in your hand, the entertainment value was superb! Well done to the Gleann.

Junior School Tour 2011

Our boys left Listowel last Friday early at 8.20am, bound for Mallow GAA grounds. On arrival we hardly had time to eat. Flicker bikes, pony trekking, Ko-Karts, bungee jumping, Zorb Ball, wrecking ball, wobbly ladders, Olympic handball, human soccer table, obstacle courses and lunch was a lot to fit! A fantastic, fun, filled day!

Honouring Miss Eleanor Scanlon

Our school celebrated our lovely library yesterday. Miss Eleanor Scanlon a former teacher, created this beautiful haven in our school. All the classes prepared a piece which ranged from book reports, stories for the junior classes, writing poetry, reciting poetry and colouring a picture to show their favourite book. All the pupils then got to see a power point presentation about Miss Scanlon and her work in creating our Library. A fitting tribute to a lady who left us a lovely library.

6th Class Surfing

6th Class had a wintery, windy, wild, wet day in Ballybunion learning how to surf. They decided to use the profit from the Young Entrepreneur Competition on surfing lessons. Wet suits and balance were the order of the day. Whilst some might think the winter was still here, Mrs. Costello, Mr. Mac Síthigh and the boys had a day to remember.

Lee Strand Visit

Iníon Uí Choileán's 2nd & 3rd class won a trip to the Lee Strand factory factory today. They got to see the production floor, the impressive conveyor belt transport system and more importantly got to taste the finished product. A fantastic day had by all. Lee Strand milk is a big favourite in our school!

Story Telling In The Big Top

Authors John Connolly and Joe Craig spoke about writing, they're own books and read aloud to the audience. Junior Entrepreneur 2011

Our 6th Class with guidance from Mr. Mac Síthigh and Mrs Costello, had a hectic week designing, producing, marketing, selling and presenting their project for the Young Entrepreneur Programme. They made a variety of pencil holders rocket pots, croc pots and animal pots which were a huge hit with the boys in the school. Dragons Den watch out!!

Shared Reading For All Classes

Every day, every boy is reading aloud with his new reading buddy for 15 minutes. The older boys of the school are partnered up with the boys in the younger classes. We aim to improve the reading skills, fluency and most importanly the confidence of the children to read aloud uninterupted for 15 minutes.

Creating a Garden

Mrs. Mahony's 1st & 2nd class were very busy in the garden last week. They planted spring onions and peas, with careful consideration of the daffodils still on display. All the classes will be out over the next few weeks with a variety of vegetables on the menu, so watch this space!

Badminton Coaching

Some of Iníon Uí Choileáin 3rd class are taking up the challenge of reading as many books as they can from the 15th of October to the 15th of November to raise funds for people with multiple sclerosis. The MS READaTHON is a sponsored read for young people which encourages children to read.

Mrs Mahony's 1st class and Máistir Mac Síthigh 5th Class went on a nature walk around the local park. The younger boys had to collect conkers, acorns, ash seeds, sycamore helicopters, berries and various leaves while the older boys had to complete a autumn project including measuring the circumference of a tree to estimate its age!

On June 21st Mrs. Mahony's 2nd Class and Ms. O' Connor's 3rd Class went to Mallow, Co. Cork for the Lets Go Summer Camp. The boys had an action packed day with the eliminator, wrecking ball, La Crosse, karting, bungee jumping, wobbly ladder and zorbe ball to mention just a few. A great day had by all.

The sun shone brightly on Wednesday for our annual sports day. As you can tell we all enjoyed the fun. The races were held in the morning and novelty activities in the afternoon. All the children in the school were divided into either the blue, white, green or black teams for the afternoon activities and points allocated for winning an activity. Sculptor Darren Enright Unveils School Crest

Sculptor Darren Enright a past pupil of Scoil Realta na Maidine returned to his old school with a marvelous replica of the school crest. Frank Lewis spoke at the unveiling about the morning star (Realta na Maidine) rising over the River Feale and the beauty surrounding our school in Listowel. At the back of the crest nine hand prints can be seen, which represent the nine classes in our school. This was a very historic and special day for all the pupils, staff and parents of our school.

1st, 2nd & 4th Visit Shannon Fisheries

To celebrate fisheries week Mrs. Mahony's 1st & 2nd and Iníon Ni Choileáin's 4th Class were invited to Shannon Fisheries. There we got to see baby trout, baby salmon, eels, crabs, may flies, stone flies among many other insects and fish that live in our River Feale. All the boys got a chance to cast fishing rods and to sit in the speed boats and jet skis used by Shannon Fisheries.

A big day in the school calendar is the Sacrament of Confirmation for the senior boys. On April 30th Mr. Guiney's sixth Class boys celebrated their Confirmation with Bishop of Kerry Bill Murphy. Third Class Get to Work as Firemen.

The Listowel Fire Brigade spent an afternoon with Ms O' Connor's third class boys recently. Fire safety in the home was the message the busy firemen wanted to talk to the boys about. The importance of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and smoke detectors in homes was spoken in detail by the firemen.

The afternoon finished nicely with the boys taking control of the fire hose.

School wins Youth Award in Listowel St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Congratulations to all the boys who represented the school so well in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. This year was the first year Scoil Realta na Maidine had a school band playing in the parade.

The Senior boys were in the band and responsible for the flags and banners. Whilst the younger boys proudly displayed the Boro, the Country, the Gleann and the Ashes jerseys. Winning the Youth award was a fitting reward to Iníon Ni Choileáin and all her hard work.
